The work images represent my personal memories and relationships with nature and motherhood within time and space. I am looking for the place where I am from and where I belong and am heading to. Visiting several volcanos, mountains and deserts gave me ideas about the birth of earth, and the circle of life and death in nature. This is part of the journey in my work. My early works were inspired by “Mobius strip”, which I will be basing my work on for the duration of my residency.
Using wire, I install my two-dimensional drawings into the topology of three-dimensional space. This structure represents a map of my mind, with thoughts and memories that will begin to develop in an infinite time and space. By repeating the meditative process of weaving metal wires brings me into the space like a bird inside of sculptural forms. Using images of old maps within the Asian landscape point of view helps to create a sense of void in space. I also present the living organism resembling parts of the human body, as well as mountains, clouds, and trees to symbolize the global environment. Much like the mother-child relationship, human beings also have existing relationships with nature expressed in sentiments such as “Mother Earth” and “Homeland”. Starting from the line on paper I extend the line into space and it becomes a sculpture and installation later. Adding a variety of colors and textures using felt, yarn and wires creates a sense of living sculpture. This work can be shared with people who could enter and walk into it, embracing the uncomfortable and absurd as well as conceptualizing physical and mental states that can represent the world we are in now. Climate change, and the negative effects that we are facing influence the state and progression of my project.
